Mabel HoernerIt all began with my grandma, Mabel Hoerner

Yes, there was a real Grandma Hoerner born in Kansas in the late 1800’s. Her first name was Mabel and even when she was young she loved to cook. Being raised on a farm with an apple orchard, she learned how to make a variety of dishes using apples. After she married and started to raise a family, she became known for her all around mastery in the kitchen. One of everyone’s favorite recipes was her extra chunky applesauce made from thick slices of fresh apples. Because it was so popular, she would give it as gifts. Little did she know that one day, one of her grandsons, Duane McCoy, would introduce her applesauce to the world.

Grandma Hoerner would start off by adding spring water, freshly ground cinnamon and nutmeg to the firmest apples she could pick from her orchard. She would cook the sauce slowly over a very low flame so the apples would maintain their scrumptious, golden slices. Her daughter, Evangeline never forgot the wonderful aroma emanating from her mother's kitchen.

Years later Duane’s mother, Evangeline, handed down her mother’s recipe to him. Duane was intrigued with the possibility of duplicating Grandma’s masterpiece. He gathered the ingredients together and rediscovered the wonderful spice accented Applesauce once again. The delicious flavor and chunky texture was what he had remembered from his childhood. Through research he discovered the best variety of apple for cooking applications, the Pink Lady. It proved to be the perfect apple for Grandma's Big Slice Applesauce because in the cooking process it maintains it's great texture and zestful flavor, and compared to other varieties, has a higher nutritional value. The only revision Duane pursued was to replace the refined sugar with fruit juice concentrate, which has obvious health benefits.

Duane searched the marketplace for something similar to this wonderful applesauce, but found nothing like it. In 1987, he started producing and marketing Grandma Hoerner's Applesauce. Old fashioned quality, all natural goodness, no artificial ingredients, and an absolutely delicious taste is what Grandma Mabel Hoerner created. Today it is being offered to the world through her grandson and is available in 8 fabulous flavors.

Today, Grandma Hoerner’s has branched out into formulating, producing and marketing a vast array of sauces, jams, toppings, condiments and dry mixes for customers that demand unique, premium quality products. The same commitment to quality and authenticity that goes into our Applesauce is applied to all product lines that we produce.

Grandma Hoerner would be proud!
